Silver Soldering Copper

Items Needed:

Small Torch - Propane or MAPP Gas
Plumbing silver solder or any lead free solder
Flux
Pipe cleaning brush or fine emery cloth or sandpaper
Pipe/tubing cutter
Rag soaked with water
Small water container

NOTE: Do not buy EZ fittings that already have solder applied

Step by Step Instructions:

1) Cut pipe to length using pipe/tubing cutter (a hacksaw may be used, but ends     must be square and smooth for any joints which will contact wort)

2) Use brush or sandpaper and clean oxidation off pipe and inside of fittings.
DO NOT touch cleaned areas with hands!

3) Apply a liberal amount of flux to the inside of fitting and outside end of pipe

4) Press pipe into fitting until it bottoms out

5) Apply heat with torch by rotating around joint area behind seam on fitting only.     The object is to get the area hot as fast as possible. While heating tap the solder
    at seam.

6) When solder melts move solder around joint. Solder will be sucked into joint. Use     wet rag and wipe excess solder from joint. Wiping is optional, but makes for a
    neater looking job.

7) If done properly there will be a silver band all around the joint, and there will     also be some solder visible around inside bottom of joint.

I have to solder and braze every single day. I had to become very good at it, and I swear by products made by a company called Harris. Most of there products (if not all) start with the word "Stay".

For soldering StayBright solder and StayClean flux are simply not equaled by anything else on the market that I have ever tried.

StaySilv 15% silphos brazing rods have the nicest flow and fill characteristics for the money period.

Any professional plumbing or refrigeration supply house, or Johnstone Supply should carry these products. Believe me on this one people.
